Black Friday? Just a Friday for Brick's Smaller Retailers
While crowds of people converged on the malls Friday for the traditional start of the shopping season, Brick's smaller retailers registered little more than a small revenue hiccup.
Mark Colino, owner of local surf shop No Flat Earth on Cedar Bridge Avenue, said that while Black Friday isn't necessarily "for" small retailers, “We had a lot of things on sale to get our winter stuff out [and] considering the economy, it was good for us."
“It was just about normal. It wasn’t more or less. It was a good day,” said Marie Colino, a store owner's mother and self-titled "store helper."
“Most people are running to the big stores for the deals,” said Marie, “then Saturday and Sunday, people come out to the smaller stores to see if they got a good deal.”
However, after more than a decade of selling surf boards, snow boards, boots and suits, even the small jump in revenue will not prevent the store from closing its doors.
