A few weeks back, one of Chief Ken Woods' fire crews was dispatched to a medical call after an 80-year-old man took a spill while fixing his roof. Then Woods got the call.
”The engine calls and asks, 'Do you want us to finish roofing the house?'” Woods recalled with a chuckle.
Woods -- who signed on Sept. 1 as the chief of both the Eureka Fire Department and the Humboldt No. 1 Fire Protection District in what was widely considered the first major step toward consolidating the two departments -- said it all comes back to the departments' new joint mission statement.
”I think the mission statement -- committed community service through vision, leadership and integrity -- is really the measuring stick we're going to use in everything we do,” Woods said. “I'm pretty proud of the guys and how they've embraced that.
