SHELBY — Metal groaned and glass shattered under the weight of the tilting concrete mixer.

The white two-door car buckled in on itself, creating sharp points and jagged edges. Inside the vehicle was a rescue mannequin’s battered torso.

With the training from Cleveland County’s Fire and Rescue College at Cleveland Community College, more than 500 area firefighters will know what to do when that situation happens.

CCC’s 17th annual Fire College welcomed men and women from fire departments and rescue squads throughout North Carolina this weekend for training in rescue operations. More than 600 people pre-registered for the event, which is the largest number in the Fire College’s history, according to Margo Greene, CCC spokeswoman.

The Fire College took place throughout CCC’s campus, including classes at the Brown Emergency Training Center.
