TMQ: How far can new No. 1 Merrimack take this run?

Todd: Well, Jim, we’re on to the eighth week of the USCHO.com Division I Men’s Poll, and we have our fifth different team atop the rankings. And what a story it is for Merrimack, which heads the poll for the first time in school history. It’s a program that’s three years removed from a nine-win season and coming off its only winning season of its Hockey East era, which dates to 1989. What does a meteoric rise like this do for the Warriors program?

Jim: We will see what the impact can be. The most important thing for Merrimack to do at this point is not get caught up in the ranking. The Warriors have never been the team with the bull’s-eye on the jersey. Now they are. We have seen this year that No. 1 teams struggle. Merrimack has a pretty easy schedule for the next two weekends, but, in the words of Shooter from the movie “Hoosiers,” you can’t get caught watching the paint dry.

Todd: It’s no stretch to think the Warriors will go into the season’s third month undefeated — they have only a game Wednesday against winless Alabama-Huntsville left before the calendar flips. And the rest of their schedule before the holiday break consists of a home-and-home series with Providence (receiving votes in the poll) and single games against Vermont, at No. 16 Colgate and against No. 13 Union.

The Empowerment Plan: The Men of 1401 Vermont St. Calendar

I just thought I would share some pictures of the building renovations. This being Detroit when I put out the word for help doing construction work I was immediately put in touch with the Corktown hipster connection. Within a day I had these guys helping me with the power-washing of the ceiling. The building dates back to the 1930's and was occupied consistently till the 80's. It was a print and design studio. If you don't know what that means in terms of building damage- think Mad Men. Those chain-smoking dapper men were going at those lucky strikes day and night. Now in our building, 1401 Vermont, you pair that workplace wide addiction with boarded up windows and you get...tar! And lost of it. Think 60+ years of nicotine and tobacco layered onto the ceiling in a thick yellow-ly brown layer. The only way to remove it was power-washing it off and vacuuming up the water to prevent it leaking into the floor below....

Phillips Scores Hat Trick, Men Post Win Against Vermont

(Hamilton, NY – Nov. 26, 2011) Junior Brittany Phillips scored her first career hat trick and added an assist to lead the Colgate women’s hockey team past Vermont 5-1 on Saturday afternoon in the first matchup of the two-game set in Starr Rink.

Phillips had four points from three goals and one assist while classmate Jenna Klynstra also had four points from four assists. Sophomore Taylor Volpe added the game-winning goal and an assist for the Raiders while sophomore Rachel Walsh also scored a goal.

After a slow start to the game in which only two shots were taken, both of which came from Colgate (6-9-1, 2-4-1 ECAC Hockey), a hooking penalty on Vermont allowed the Raiders an extra skater at the beginning of the fourth minute. Colgate soon capitalized seconds later at the 4:08 mark when Phillips received a pass from Volpe and blasted it into the back of the net to give her team a 1-0 lead. Junior Jessica Hootz was also credited with an assist. As the game progressed, the Catamounts found their offensive rhythm with a trio of power play opportunities. They came close to scoring in the 13th minute when a shot made its way past senior goalie Kimberly Sass but hit the pipe. However, at the end of the first 20 minutes of play, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Raiders.
